My VADIS disc confirms that it is the rear one. Looks to be on the RH side of the block looking from the front. Cheers Minstrel

Strange but I have same problem. 1997 960 2.5 Litre. No sign of the sensor at rear of block. However, I was able to look at a vadis disc for my year car and it only shows one sensor marked ECT on component list and it is situated at front of engine by the thermostat housing.(and there is one there) If this is correct I wonder where the Temperature Gauge gets its imput from? Regards all

The ECU temperature sender is indeed the one in the thermostat housing with a plug on the end of a wire attatched to the sender . the Instrument temp gauge gets it's info from the Engine Control Unit via the CAN network ...

As a point of interest, I had a look at Vadis for a 1994 960 3 litre and sure enough there is shows the ECT at rear of Engine. All different from the 1996/7 models as regards sensors as far as I can see.
