I had similar problem with my T5. It would suddenly miss a beat then continue fine for some time. Turned out to be the coil breaking down. Fitted new one and no trouble since.

Misfires are usually a result of an issue with the fuel intake system or the ignition. A mentioned, check the distributor/rotor arm and leads. HT Leads can be tested by a leads testing kit or at a diagnostic auto centre with the correct equipment. If you have coil packs, they can be tested with multimeters in general.

I've had a bit of a splutter on mine for a couple o weeks now, it's been caused by the head gasket leaking a bit of water into one of the cylinder and meant that the plug was a bit damp until the engine warmed up and dried the moisture out.
