Hi, please can anyone diagnose the strange noise my new 850 se is emitting. To describe it sounds like wind blowing through a small gap in a slightly open window but isn`t but more sounds like a electric buzzing intermittently from the passenger side of the car ???????????????. Any help would be great. Thanks Minty
A few thoughts: Is the blower fan working properly? It's mounted under the dash on the passenger side, and if it's dying it could certainly make the noise you describe. Is the noise there when the ignition is on but the engine not running? Does the noise vary with the speed of the car, or the speed of the engine? Does the car have electrically adjusted mirrors? It could be a faulty motor. Are there any loose or missing bits of trim or door seal etc? Is the car an estate? Odd noises from the load area are pretty much an inevitability! My V70 had a rattle and buzz from the rear passenger side which turned out to be the retractable load cover gently vibrating! I've got so used to it that when the load cover is out I miss the noise! Get a friend to sit in the back of the car as you drive around - it's surprising how a noise can be transferred away from it's true source. Cheers Jack
Hi, thanx for the quick reply, it is certqainly not a blower fan thing. it is so random that i think it could be the electric wing mirror playing up as thats the area i look at when i hear the noise. I will keep an eye on it tommorrow and see what happens, thanx, minty
Hi, well i checked the passenger mirror and its not it. The intermittent buzzing only happens when the car is being driven and more so at the beggining of a journey. I have slowed the car down when the noise has started and it stops when i slow down to near standstill. It does not seem to affect the running of the car but still need to find out what it is cause its doin me ed in !!!!!! Minty

Hi guys, its a manual gearbox. If i can give an update on the problem it i is this. The car starts super fine but after about 100 yards there is a sound that can only be described as the car going over a tin can(i have tried leaving the hand brake off overnight thinking that it may be sticking but no) and then an intermitent loud whirring/buzzing sound from the passenger side. Really doin my head in as the car is such a great drive. Hope this may shed some light , Thanks Minty
Could the initial crunch be the abs doing the selftest at 15mph after starting? Could it be a noisy tyre? My Toyos can be loud on some surfaces, maybe swap tyres round to see if the noise shifts?
Reading through the posts I think I know what it is - please prove me wrong LOL. The clue came when you said that the noise started after you had the sound like running over a tin can. This is almost certainly the ABS doing it's self test. This is done the first time you get over 20mph after you've restarted the car. The motor sound (whistling / buzzing) that then starts could well be the ABS motor which modulates brake pressure to the locking wheel(s) under heavy braking. The 850's have a history of failed solder joints in the ABS ECU. Could this be a symptom of a failed ECU or wheel sensor? What do you guys and gals think?
